Biography

Richard Koep is a managing partner in our L.A. County office and has been with the firm since 1982.

Richard has litigated 85 jury trials, which has resulted in him being promoted to the Advocate level in the American Board of Trial Advocates.  He has beaten his pre-trial statutory offer (a feat that entitles his clients to litigation costs) in 80 out of the 85 jury trials and has obtained 60 defense verdicts.  Rick has successfully tried cases against many of the premier plaintiff attorneys in Southern California.

Richard has been honored by being named a "Southern California Super Lawyer" for both 2004 and 2005.  This identifies him as being one of the "top 5%" of the Southern California Bar.  He was also listed as a "Southern California Super Lawyer" in Los Angeles Magazine in February 2004 and February 2005.

In the more than 20 years with the firm, Rick has handled a wide variety of litigated matters.  He has represented various insurance companies; product manufacturers; supermarkets; discount food/merchandise warehouses; restaurants; malls; bowling alleys; amusement parks; theaters; factories; banks; parking lots; homeowner's associations; hotels; and commercial centers.

Some of Richard's clients Burger King, Wild Oats Markets, Hewlett-Packard Company, DaimlerChrysler Corporation, 21st Century Insurance, State Farm Insurance, and Mercury Insurance.

Richard has given many seminars.  Some of the topics he has presented seminars on include: premises liability, third party violence, product liability, fraud, arbitration and trial, insurance bad faith, catastrophic personal injuries, and employment discrimination litigation.

He has a unique background as a Municipal Court Prosecutor in Colorado, during which time he prosecuted court and jury criminal cases.  After serving as a prosecutor, he relocated to California and joined the firm.

In law school, Richard participated in moot court competition and was a member of the law review.  He also gained valuable experience by working two years as a law clerk for the Assistant Presiding Judge of the District Court in St. Paul.

Prior to law school, he served three years in the Marine Corps, including one year in Viet Nam.  Rick was honorably discharged.  After serving in the Marine Corps, he returned to civil life and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from California State University, Northridge.

Richard is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of California and Colorado.

He is a member of the Southern California Defense Counsel, the American Board of Trial Advocates (an invitation only legal organization of experienced civil and criminal trial lawyers), and the Ventura County Bar Association.
